A portable air conditioner can be difficult to set up when its supplied vent fitting does not suit the opening you have. The hose and outlet need to meet properly, and the available space may make the standard arrangement awkward.
Coast Lab has worked on developing portable aircon vent installation solutions for settings ranging from home to camping. The design challenge is to connect the equipment to the intended outlet in a way that suits the particular setup.
Start with the aircon and the opening
Portable units do not all use the same connection. The model, hose dimensions and supplied fittings matter, along with the size and shape of the opening the vent needs to reach.
At home, that opening might be part of a window arrangement. In a camping setup, the available space and the way the unit is positioned may be quite different. A useful brief includes photos of both ends of the connection, measurements and an indication of how the hose will run between them.
Design for the way the setup will be used
A home installation that stays in place has different priorities from something packed away after a trip. For a portable setup, ease of assembly and removal can be important. The fitting also needs to suit the space around the unit and the outlet.
Custom design allows the connection geometry to be considered around those requirements. A purpose-made adapter may help where two existing parts do not meet, or where the outlet needs a shape the standard kit does not provide.
Keep the unit's requirements in the brief
The manufacturer's venting instructions remain the starting point. A custom fitting needs to account for the required outlet size, hose arrangement and operating conditions. Restricting the airflow to make a part fit can create a different problem.
Material suitability also depends on the heat and exposure at the fitting's location. Compatibility should be assessed for the actual aircon model and installation, rather than assumed from the appearance of the connector.
If your portable aircon needs a custom vent connection, send Coast Lab the model details, fitting measurements and photos of the installation area. We can explore a solution for the way you use it at home or away.
