A customer came to Coast Lab with an unusual request: she wanted models of two sculptures, but all she had to show us were photographs.
There was no ready-to-print file or technical drawing. The pictures were our starting point, and the challenge was to turn what we could see into physical objects that matched what she had in mind.
It was a different kind of project for Coast Lab, and one we were pleased to take on.
Creating a model from photographs
A photograph shows an object from a particular angle. A physical model needs a shape that works from every side. Proportions, depth and details all need careful consideration when moving from a picture to a three-dimensional design.
That makes this kind of work different from printing an existing model. Before production can begin, the object needs to be interpreted and developed into something printable.
For this project, the photographs gave us a reference, while the customer’s expectations guided the result. The goal was to create models she would be happy to take home and display.
You do not need to arrive with a finished design
Many custom projects start with an everyday description: “I would like something like this,” or “Could you make a smaller version?”
That is enough to begin a conversation. A photo, a rough sketch or an idea can help us understand what you want to achieve. We can then discuss the size, details and practical considerations involved.
Some objects are more challenging to recreate than others, particularly when the available photographs show only limited views. Reviewing the references helps us establish what is possible and which details matter most to you.

We were able to make the customer’s idea happen, and her response made the project especially rewarding:
